The guidelines is a practical reference tool developed for students, by students, to guide the ethical conduct of overseas fieldwork. Informed by a need for greater support for students undertaking fieldwork in fulfillment of their academic curriculum, this initiative recognises the importance of upholding a standard of responsible, accountable, respectful, and competent conduct for the benefit of students, the academic institutions they represent, as well as the communities and individuals with whom they are engaging.

The Development Studies Association of Ireland (DSAI) and the Irish Forum for Global Health (IFGH) have supported the development and publication of these guidelines.  Nested in the network of DSAI’s postgraduate working group and IFGH’s student outreach group, Students for Ethical Engagement (SEE) have led the rigorous research process to build an evidence base and produce the resulting guide.  Throughout each stage of their development, the Guidelines have also been continuously supported by members of Comhlámh and strive to embody a similar essence as that in the Code of Good Practice.

The Guidelines were presented on Thursday November 24th at the DSA Ireland Annual Conference 2016 “Beyond Aid? Innovative Models for Social Justice”.  In the spirit of the conference, questioning existing practice and exploring alternative development paradigms, the relevance and application of these Guidelines to inform the broader conduct of international academic fieldwork was discussed.
