Back to the Future is an EU-funded project which began in 2011 to support and promote continuous engagement among returned overseas volunteers.
The project involved the development of resources, the delivery of courses, and then action projects emerging from them. Several action projects are up and running.
Michelle Griffin has started a blog on how to live more ethically, following being overseas twice and left with bigger questions on development and the impact we can make in our choices and actions from Ireland. Michelle will be updating it weekly.
Maeve McCutcheon started the Beyond Book Club to read interesting books with a global dimension, and share the conversation with people, including those who have not been overseas themselves. The book club is a monthly event, meeting in the FOAM cafe.
Nahid Dabiri, Emily Price and Fran Egan hosted a series of 3 art workshops exploring gender equality and empowerment which resulted in 2 paintings being developed. You can see a video about the project here.
The World’s Best News was initiated by 3 returnees, Sean O’Connell, Ross McCarthy, Maeve Montague and Fiona Ryan, with support from Dochas. So far, there have been articles in the Metro Herald and in October 3,500 copies were handed out to people on the streets of Dublin and Cork day here.
James Sheehan, Fiona Boyd and Margaret Hayes delivered workshops in schools, reaching up to 100 young people. The workshops were a chance for these returnees to share their experiences of volunteering overseas, but also to hear what the students knew about global issues and have a conversation about social justice issues locally and globally.
Grace Maclean has started the ‘Returnee Meet Up’ group which meets once a month. It is a chance to have interesting chats and sometimes the group goes to watch a film or just go for a cup of coffee.
In August 2013 Mia Joyce was instrumental in organising SERVEfest, an event to celebrate 10 years of Serve and a chance for Serve volunteers to get together, celebrate and to break a world record!
