NEW! Launch of 'Images of the Global South'

Compass - Development Education in the Primary School (Comhlámh) has just published a free leaflet for teachers, ‘Images of the Global South - Guidelines for primary educators for working with photographs from around the world'.

The leaflet is designed as a guide for primary school educators who wish to enrich the global dimension of their work with children through the use of images.Global South flyer_opens in new window

Photographs are one of the most direct and accessible means of introducing the wider world into the classroom, but images can be contentious and complex.

This resource provides specific criteria on how to go about choosing images of the developing world, suggestions for developing photo-literacy in the classroom, ideas for incorporating image work across the curriculum, and resources and contacts for further reference.

For hard copies of the leaflet contact Lizzie Downes at Comhlámh - tel: 01-478 3490 or email lizzie@comhlamh.org.

What is Compass?

Compass - Development Education in the Primary School is a network of organisations and individuals committed to the integration of development and intercultural education in the primary school sector in Ireland.

What does Compass do?

Through the provision of in-service training and outreach education in development education for educators, the Compass Project aims to promote a more global and inclusive curriculum.

For more information about Compass’s mission, aims and objectives, please visit here.

Why is Compass’ s work important?

Through development education, children learn to link the local and the global and to seek self-reliance and social justice at home and abroad. Compass believes that we cannot ignore global issues in primary education, especially as Irish classrooms become increasingly multicultural. Tackling global issues with children can be challenging. Compass can support you in terms of advice, training and resources to make the task easier.

How is development education related to the Primary Curriculum?

Development education uses participative and child-centred methodologies which foster self-esteem, respect for others, openness, co-operation, creativity and analysis. Development education does not have to add to a teacher’s workload.

The aims of development education reflect those of the primary curriculum. Development education enriches the curriculum by making the global and justice issues in each subject strand more explicit.
