Comhlámh is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Our membership is continuing to grow on the back of a lot of campaigning work, public events, a heightened media profile and a wider recognition of the organisation generally.
What is particularly encouraging is that people of all ages and backgrounds are joining Comhlámh this year. They believe that being a member of an organisation like ours is more important than ever during an economic crisis. Right now, human rights, social justice and global development have never been more important.
Throughout last year Comhlámh has continued to play a key role in bringing a global perspective to public debates in Ireland - based on the experience of development workers and our members. It has done this by directly engaging in campaigns and by building up the skills of development educators and campaigners throughout Ireland. Comhlámh has been to the fore in shaping key public issues including trade justice, meeting the 0.7% aid commitment, anti-racism and the role of the development worker overseas. Our Volunteering Options and Development Education Programmes play a vital role in engaging and informing people from all backgrounds and all life stages about the Global South and the impact of development.
