PHOTO STUNT FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS TO MARK THE WORLD BANK MEETING IN DUBLIN NEXT WEEK: "BRIAN COWEN, BIN THE BANK"

Sunday Nov 11th, 11:45 am, Dail Eireann, Kildare Street, Dublin 1

Fifteen activists dressed as Finance Minister Brian Cowen will receive this message from the organisers through a gigantic 3 metre long megaphone: "Brian, bin the bank!"

Organised by Debt and Development Coalition Ireland, Comhlamh, the Latin America Solidarity Centre, Christian Aid and Trócaire

The World Bank is meeting in Malahide next Monday and Tuesday and this photocall will start off a public campaign by NGOs during the World Bank's visit. World Bank photo opp. outside Dail_opens in new window

The Bank and its rich member governments, including Ireland, will negotiate how much money they will give to one of the lending arms of World Bank (IDA). The World Bank is still imposing harmful policies as a condition for developing countries to receive its loans and aid. Therefore we demand that Finance Minister, Brian Cowen, should not give any money to this arm of the World Bank unless the World Bank immediately stops attaching harmful conditions to its loans and aid. Instead, the minister should re-route this aid to aid channels without economic conditions.

The imposed economic conditions undermine developing countries' sovereignty and independence.
