Comhlámh’s head, Mark Cumming, talks quickly about our new look Focus magazine.
I love this quote by Ricardo L. Morales; “If you give me a fish you have fed me for a day. If you teach me to fish then you have fed me…….until the river is contaminated or the shoreline seized for development. But if you teach me to organize then whatever the challenge I can join together with my peers and we will fashion our own solution.”
Never has this been truer at a time of global change and increasing questioning of established institutions of authority. Recently we were asked the question whether we needed less politicians in our Parliament; the question that possibly many wanted to be asked was how can we ensure greater public participation in more open and accountable governance of our country. How can we get citizens to engage and participate more in all aspects of life affecting them? And in particular, how can we ensure that those on the margins of our society can have their voices articulated and heard. That would have been a more interesting question.
Providing spaces where members of Comhlámh can come together to fashion a future based on values learned from good practice in global and local development is what we have been about since 1975. Get involved in one of various member groups, drop in or drop us a line, there is lots happening, be part of it.
Congratulations to the editorial group who have grasped the task of transforming the look and feel of Focus. We hope you like it and look forward to your feedback.
