Peace Brigades International (PBI) is an international NGO that has been promoting nonviolence and protecting human rights for over 30 years.
They send teams of international volunteers to areas of conflict at the request of local human rights defenders (HRDs) who are threatened because of their legitimate, nonviolent, human rights activities.
Volunteers provide international protective accompaniment backed up by political support networks around the world, and provide protection and moral support to human rights defenders at risk. Their mandate is simple – to create space for peace and to protect human rights. We do this through a combination of the following: physical presence, physical accompaniment, public relations, networking, lobbying, observing, reporting and building international support networks.
They currently have accompaniment field projects in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico and Nepal. These projects are supported by a network of PBI Country Groups that operate in 16 different countries throughout the Americas, Europe, and Australia. The work of the Country Groups is integral to the effectiveness of our protection of human rights defenders in the field. They are responsible for, among other things, recruiting and supporting field volunteers, lobbying governments to respond to threats against human rights defenders, building networks of support among international NGOs, hosting visiting HRDs during speaking tours, fundraising for projects, advocating for national and international human rights protection, promoting nonviolence and peace education.
In 2014, PBI are planning to establish a Country Group in Ireland. They are seeking like-minded individuals who are passionate about human rights, nonviolence, peace, and social justice to join us in this exciting project. They are looking for people with a range of skills and experience – advocacy, communications, solidarity work, policy research, peace education, accounting, fundraising… more – with time and energy to commit to founding a small but effective NGO, dedicated to protecting a courageous group of people and promoting the peaceful transformation of conflicts.
If you would like to hear more about PBI and their plans for PBI Ireland/Eire (name still to be decided!) please join an informational meeting at Comhlamh Offices, 12 Parliament Street, Dublin 2 on Wednesday 28th of May at 6pm.
