The Comhlámh Coming Home weekend

This year’s Coming Home weekend took place in the Emmaus Centre, in Swords, at the beginning of November.

A number of returned volunteer development workers spent the weekend discussing the challenges they faced overseas, the benefits and rewards of those placements, and they talked about some of the demands of coming home.  Some of the participants have been “home” for many months and some a couple of years; some people had been away for a relatively short period of time, while others had been away from Ireland for a much longer time.  Some returned volunteer development workers were back working in their original careers, while others wanted a completely new change of direction.  But the one thing all of the participants had in common was a motivation to share their experiences, within the group, during the sessions which were spread over the two days and one night.

At the end of the weekend, all of the participants were happy they had come.  Comhlámh’s Ruth Powell and Gráinne O’Neill facilitated the sessions, which were a mix of individual, small group and plenary activities.  There were plenty of refreshments and vegetarian and vegan options throughout the mealtimes and breaks, where people could continue their chats informally and in the beautiful surroundings of the Emmaus Centre.  There was also time to explore the beautiful grounds in between the sessions, and enjoy the spectacular autumn colours of early November.  The Coming Home weekend has been a central activity of Comhlámh’s work for many years, and we are delighted to announce that there will be another one in 2018.  Keep your eyes on our social media, our ELINK monthly newsletter and website for further information.
